"Juiced"
Got Juice?
The building of an Electric Cruiser,
two Electric Drag bikes, Cafe Racer,
.....and on and on.
Why did we build these?
Tammy (well OK, me too) has always wanted to race a Drag
bike.
We have raced WKA Karts
and she is a former track
champion.
We have Drag raced a door car, a carbureted
Rear Engine
Dragster,
a blown,
injected Front Engine
Dragster (even a
Go kart at the drag strip, but that is another
story)
and
now, Electric
drag bikes. In 2008 we had "retired"
from
running the FED
for many reasons. We
were smart
enough
to see
that
the speed and our getting older reactions
were
not aligned,
plus the amount of money it takes to run
a
good car, and
some other reasons too. I envy the older
racers
that can
still do it,
but
for us, it was time to change.
As most of you know, once you are infected with the
Drag racing virus,
you are hooked for life. It did not
take
long for us to want to go
racing again as we both
make
bad spectators. We needed something fairly inexpensive,
a ton less
maintenance than a FED and still be able
to watch our
friends
race between rounds, something
we had not
been able to do for many
years.
For Tammy, most race bikes were too big and she had
trouble with the
shifting and clutch deal. Mick Withers
(Mighty Mick Motorcycle racer)
was quick to point
out
the ease of air shifters and such, but that is
more
money
and work we did not need at this point is our racing life.
Since we already have an Electric street bike, why not a
drag
race
version? They are now built, and we will be
having fun
racing each other at the local drag strip.
Are we planning on “hitting the tour”? Heck No. This is
just for
weekend fun, when we want, and since there is
almost no prep or
maintenance, on a moments notice
head to the track. Just charge up the
batteries and go PLAY!
Since our first ride it has expanded to Pit bike,
1/4 scale
RC cars and now even a Cafe Racer.
When will the madness ever stop??? Never!!!
Safety!
If you are even thinking of building one of these things,
DO YOUR
HOMEWORK! (See our build pages too.)
Yes, in some cases they may be a glorified golf cart in design,
but
6 car batteries (in our case big dry cells) tied together
will kill you if you do not
pay attention. There are some
well written safety rules for these “oversized portable drills”.
They even took the time to explain
each rule trying to
keep any gray areas down to a minimum.
NEDRA Rulebook
So if you see (because you will not hear it going down the
track)
an
Electric Drag Race car or motorcycle bike at your local
race track,
take a minute to
wander down to their pit. Most
likely you will
see the same quality in
preparation, pride
in
work and desire
for racing you will see in any
other race team.
Take care!
